The inauguration of Polo in Shandur is traditionally credited to the balti raja of Skardu; who cordially invites potential visitors to vicariously experience a traditional polo tournament in the first delightful week of July between the local teams of Gilgit and Chitral. Meticulously organized and financed by the Tourism Corporation of NWFP, the official tournament is held on Shandur Top, the highest polo ground in the phenomenal world at 3,700 standard meters. The festival additionally includes Folk music, dancing and a camping village is set up. Many talented teams of Chitral and Gilgit-Baltistan have constantly played the notable game of polo closest to its traditional form.
